Engineering Manager - Speed

Cloudflare is looking for an Engineering Manager to lead the Speed team.

The Speed team builds technology to measure and accelerate web experiences on Cloudflare. Our mission is to help our customers’ websites get faster. The Speed team creates innovative new features like Fonts, Observatory and Speculation Hints, looks after mature systems at scale like Web Analytics, and manages a large pipeline of web performance data that can be used to help benchmark and improve other products.

As the engineering manager, you will play a key role in shaping the team’s strategy, working with other leaders and teams to build products that customers love, and that meet the team’s ambitious standards of quality, reliability, and scalability.

You will be expected to lead, inspire, and foster a culture of diversity. You will communicate clearly and with empathy, and work towards creating a cohesive high-performance team. You will be responsible for all aspects of team life - building roadmaps, running meetings, creating processes, hiring, and setting up engineers for success.

The team predominantly uses Go, Rust and Typescript and is familiar with browser APIs. Any prior experience in these technologies will make you well-suited for this role.

  • Experience building and leading a team, including hiring, coaching, and professional development
  • A self-directing nature, keen to take ownership of projects from start to finish
  • Experience coordinating projects across multiple teams
  • Empathetic and clear communication skills, verbal and written
  • Previous programming experience
  • Knowledge of browser APIs and browser performance tooling (eg. Lighthouse)
  • Strong data analysis skills, ideally with experience in Grafana, SQL or BigQuery
  • Excellent technical leadership skills, driving for very high-quality and low-complexity code
  • A drive for implementing tools, documentations, processes, instrumentation, and metrics to enhance the team’s velocity and performance

  • Experience building distributed systems
  • Experience programming with Rust, Go, Typescript
  • Experience with Cloudflare Workers
  • Experience leading distributed teams

Compensation

  • For Colorado-based hires: Estimated annual salary of $180,000 - $233,000
  • For New York City, Washington, and California (excluding Bay Area) based hires: Estimated annual salary of $200,000 - $261,000
  • For Bay Area-based hires: Estimated annual salary of $228,000 - $275,000

This role is eligible to participate in Cloudflare’s equity plan.
